Asdal: 'Is Vael Looking at the Right Border?'

ASDAL Senator Tobias Vael gave a speech in Varek tonight about the Toren River. About water rights and treaty frameworks and the Caldris relationship. I want to be precise about what I'm saying here, because I think it matters: it was a good speech. He knows that file. He has known it for a decade. If you want a Legat Consul who can walk into a Caldris negotiation on day one and not embarrass the Republic, Vael is probably your candidate.

ASDAL The question I want to ask — and I want to be clear this is a question, not a verdict — is whether the Toren River is where his instincts go because it's the most important thing, or because it's the most familiar thing. Because those are different answers and they produce different Legat Consuls.

ASDAL Mak's campaign said tonight: the Toren River isn't on fire. Carrow's office said nothing, which by now is its own kind of statement. Vael's team said the Senator had addressed Lake Varda in his Senate briefing request. That's true. It's also not an answer to the question I'm asking.

ASDAL The question is not whether Tobias Vael is qualified. He is qualified. The question is whether his instincts, right now, in Year 12, Month 12, are pointing at the right border. That's not a question about his record. It's a question about his judgment. And the voters in this Republic — including the ones in Korda Territory and Rhovane who are watching this differently than the ones in Varek — are going to answer it.
